Prairie Dogs to Paradise: Irrigation Around Fort Collins, 1860-1880

An Example of Using "Big6 Skills" for a Research Project

Lucy Burris developed this activity for an anthropology project at CSU, and it is based on the Big6 Skills Overview. Her research project investigated ditches in Larimer County, Colorado to determine how early decisions and practices shaped and continue to shape the community of Fort Collins. It focuses specifically on ditches constructed between 1860 and 1880 that have directly impacted the landscape of modern Fort Collins.

This activity was designed for grades 9-12; however the research project may also be used as an example for high school curriculum. The project uses the Colorado Model Content Standards 1-5 for History as outlined in the Colorado Student Assessment Program. Activities for grades K-9 could also be developed using this process and the information on the site.

The activity has the following sections:

Self-Test - quizzes the readers knowledge of irrigation in Fort Collins.
Prairie Dogs to Paradise - is the paper developed from research using the Big6 method.
Learning More - taking the research a step further and connecting it with current issues.
Hypothesis / Interpretation - formulation and analysis of the research project.
