DescriptionBig Thompson Flood; area just west of the Narrows. The Big Thompson Canyon flood on July 31, 1976 occurred when a thunderstorm stalled over the canyon dropping twelve inches of rain during a four hour period. The river rose nineteen feet forcing a torrent of water down the canyon and onto the eastern plain. 145 people were killed, 418 homes and 52 businesses were destroyed and an additional 138 homes were damaged.
