2006 Projects

"Historical Sketches: Fort Collins and Larimer County" by James R. Miller includes six scrapbooks of historical articles that appeared in the "Fort Collins Coloradoan" from 1962-1970. A complete card index for Scrapbooks 1-4 are in the Local History Archive and half of the index has been entered into the Scrapbooks Index. The scrapbooks are in the Main and Harmony libraries and the Local History Archive.

New digital images of selected Fort Collins, Larimer County, and Colorado maps are now online at the Map Collections index. There is a hyperlink on those entries that have a map. Once the map is displayed, click on the lower right corner of the map to magnify it for viewing purposes. The Local History Archive has a collection of over 350 historic maps and the collection includes an online 1915 index to the property owners of Northern Colorado.

Read articles about significant historical events at News Flashbacks! The 63rd Anniversary Special Edition of the "Fort Collins Express Courier" is now online. It provides detailed history of Fort Collins and its pioneers from 1874 to 1936.

Digitization of early Fort Collins newspapers from 1874-1923 was completed in 2006 as part of the Colorado Newspaper Digitization Project. Our newspapers start with the year 1873; and due to a fire we have only 6 months of the 1874 newspaper and the newspapers from 1878-present. There were several different newspapers during this time period and not all are digitized; however, the issues of one of the papers, "The Fort Collins Courier," are online from 1878-1923. If you want to find information on this area before 1874, perform a search in the site's earlier Colorado newspapers that were published before 1874. Many state newspapers included information on the "Cache La Poudre Valley." Also the project's on-line Rocky Mountain News and Boulder County News may provide "Fort Collins" news for the gap from 1874-1878 as Fort Collins was incorporated as a town in 1873.

Now you can use the power of the on-line archive to build your own historic timeline of Fort Collins. The interactive timeline includes options to limit the time period, present detailed information or event summaries, and select events that match selected text as an aid to searching for specific events. The Timeline also accepts public input of events and bits of history!!! Each "Timebit" is a distinct piece of information or snapshot of a moment in time. By compiling the "Timebits" in an organized database, the Fort Collins Timeline can generate custom timelines about specific periods or sequences of events. The Timeline accepts "timebits" about events significant to Fort Collins history. The Timebit Entry format can be accessed from the bottom of any TimeList in the Timeline area by selecting the "How to Add a Timebit?" option. Try the Timebit entry now!

Enter your family's history in the Fort Collins Database!!! The Fort Collins Museum Local History Archive accepts direct submissions of historical information from patrons and members of the world wide web community. A person from the public may enter information about people, relationships between people, and linkages between people and historic structures (buildings) in Fort Collins, Colorado. The public input screens may be accessed from the search area (try it now?) of the database. If you have documented information that is not in the database, this function allows you to enter the information directly from your computer using the cut and paste functions of your browser. The Local History Archivist or a selected research volunteer will then perform a cursory review of the information before accepting it as part of the database. Due to a lack of staff, the submitted information will not be researched in-depth for its accuracy. The system encourages the use of e-mail and computer database tools in exploring, sharing, and correcting information between our users, as well as library staff and volunteers.
