DescriptionPhotograph from an undated article from the Triangle Review newspaper, likely from the 1990s. Text alongside article reads: "Colorado State University (CSU) Founders Monument- Once located near stately Old Main until it burned down in 1971, it now takes some persistence locating this squat stone marker honoring the four who donated land for the original Agricultural College- A. H. Patterson, John Mathews, Henry Clay Peterson and Joseph Mason and Robert Dalzell. Colorado State University (CSU) History Professor Jim Hansen says the marker was erected over a time capsule in 1916 by the Fort Collins Pioneer Society the year after William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody visited Fort Collins and asked why there was no monument to his friend Arthur Patterson. Patterson and Cody had come west together as 16-year-olds in 1860 and fought the Confederates together in New Mexico. Patterson settled in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1866 and soon established himself as a community leader. He built two downtown business blocks and served as county clerk and a city councilman." Updated May 17, 2011: The CSU Founders monument can be found on the CSU campus along the sidewalk on the south side of Old Main Drive just south of Spruce Hall. Old Main Drive is the first street south of Laurel Street off of College Avenue that leads west into the CSU Oval. The monument is made from gray granite and stands nearly 5 feet tall.
