TitleVictor Akin's horse, "Buck"
Image ID NumberH21211
DescriptionVictor Akin's horse "Buck", a buckskin, hense the name "Buck". In his early days, he won races at fairs, etc. He was the "winner" of the very nice bedroom suite among other things. He was also used to entertain (and terrorize) tenderfoot school teachers that came to the district. In those days there was no such thing as high powered machinery - horse power meant "powered by horses". Victor leased some teams to work on reconstructing a dam at Chamber's Lake. He supervised his teams during the week and rode Buck down the Poudre Canyon Trail to check things out at home on weekends. An all night trek up the canyon on Sunday night got him back on duty. This routine went on for several weeks. Buck was sole transportation for Helen to District #35 school during seventh and eighth grades. Plus; it was decreed that there was space behind the saddle going to waste. Mildred Jesser attended third grade as a passenger. Buck kept our lunches thoroughly shaken up. Fort Collins, Colorado
