The Big Thompson Canyon flood on July 31, 1976 occurred when a thunderstorm stalled over the canyon dropping twelve inches of rain during a four hour period. The river rose nineteen feet forcing a torrent of water down the canyon and onto the eastern plain. A peak point rainfall of 7.4 inches was measured in Rist Canyon, compared to a 14 inch peak in the Glen Haven area of the Big Thompson.
