The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press asked people nationally to rate the decades since the '60s - the 2000s were seen as the worst, and 50 percent said they were leaving the decade with a negative impression. (Coloradoan 31 Dec 2009, Page 2)

Foremost among national concerns during the decade were the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and the US invasion of Iraq (2003). An anthrax scare (2001), the space shuttle Columbia explosion (2003), Hurricane Katrina's devastation of the Gulf Coast (2005), and the killing spree at Virginia Tech (2007) added to the gloom. In 2008, a housing market crash was quickly followed by a general financial crash; Barack Obama was elected President of the United States in 2008, amidst fierce debates about health care in the USA.

Fort Collins industries in the early part of the decade reported significant job cuts (HP, Agilent, AE, and Kodak among them), and the story was the same by the end of the decade: northern Colorado lost 4,500 jobs in 2009, with Kodak, HP, AMD, AE, and Woodward Governor all cutting at least 100 staff, and Loveland's Waterpik facility closing altogether. Yet there were glimmers of exciting activity, too. A new fairgrounds facility got lots of attention - eventually called The Ranch - and a Forbes magazine poll in 2008 ranked the area third-best in the nation for business (other national rankings included "Best Place to Live" by Money magazine (2006), "Best Place in Colorado to raise kids" by Business Week (2008), and "9th-Best Cheap City" by Forbes (2009). Colorado baseball garnered national attention in 2007, when the Rockies advanced to the World Series.

Despite the financial downturn of the decade Fort Collins continued to show signs of life: a new county justice center opened, new schools opened (including Zach Elementary and Kinard Junior High), a shopping center at Harmony-Ziegler got the OK, and new police headquarters were established on Timberline. Leadership was in the hands of mayor Ray Martinez (1999-2005) and Doug Hutchinson (2005-2011), with City manager Darin Atteberry coming on board in 2004 (and still serving in that role when this was written in 2020).

Two stories of local origin garnered national attention: Tim Masters (falsely imprisoned for a stabbing, freed in 2008) and the Balloon Boy hoax (parents report their son taken aloft in a balloon, then plead guilty to perpetrating a hoax, 2009). Donald Trump spoke at Bixpo (2005), the Dalai Lama came to the Shambhala Center (2006) and President George W Bush spoke in Greeley (2006). Other notable appearances were the Olympic torch (2002), Lamar's Donuts (2003), a spate of bank robberies and arson (2003-2004), the Gardens on Spring Creek (2004), the Center for Fine Art Photography (2004), Museo de las Tres Colonias (2006), and the Medical Center of the Rockies (2007).

Colorado State University had three presidents in the 2000s: Albert Yates (1990-2003), Larry Penley (2003-2008), and Tony Frank (2008-2019). Tuition increased throughout the decade, and several large-scale building endeavors were completed (including a new atmospheric sciences research, renovation of Hughes stadium, and a new School for the Environment). When Samantha Spady died of alcohol poisoning (2004), much discussion about alcohol consumption on campus followed. A Collegian editor's intentional use of an expletive in a 2007 editorial caused a short but fierce fracas. A biodefense grant worth $40M (2005), online degrees via CSU Global (2007), the largest freshman class on record (2008), and a new doctorate in biofuels (2008) showed CSU's continued strength and innovation.

Fort Collins had its share of tragedies, including the murder of Lacy Miller (2003), the death of young Jaryd Atadero (2003, probably a mountain lion), the murder of couple Javal Marshall-Fields and Vivian Wolf (2006), and the murder of Heather Garraus at the hands of Shawna Nelson (2008). Rampant wildfires - Owl Canyon (2001), Hayman and Big Elk (2002), and Rist Canyon (2003) - and drought devastated the land (and the tourism industry) in the early part of the decade. There were fires in the city, too; a fourplex burned and the Elkhorn Motel in Laporte. The city experienced the snowiest winter in history (2006-2007), the devastating effects of pine beetles (2008), and a deadly twister in Windsor (2008). Reports of West Nile in Colorado came in 2002; by 2003 the virus was running rampant, and still made the news in 2007, with Colorado leading the nation in number of cases. Mad cow disease devastated the Swift company in Greeley (2004), and Bird flu appeared in 2006, fanning worldwide concern by 2009.

Citizens of Fort Collins had many spirited discussions throughout the decade: chickens (City Council approved an ordinance allowing urban chickens in 2008), an occupancy limit on rentals (the "roommate rule," in 2005), how to decorate for the winter holiday season (2007), a new City logo (spoofed on the TV show Parks and Rec), smoking in public (2003 saw a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants), and marijuana use (medical marijuana shops crop up in 2009).
